Dear members of the Adelphi University community,
In light of recent news coverage, and the upcoming holiday travel season, we wanted to share an update on the latest news and information about Ebola. The virus continues to take a devastating toll on communities and families in West Africa. We continue to share in our compassion for those affected and remain inspired by the courage of the caregivers and the medical professionals who are working to contain the outbreak.
Since our last update, there still have been no cases of Ebola at Adelphi or on Long Island. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website is updated regularly and remains an important resource for you and your family regarding the latest Ebola news. Our Threat Assessment Team continues to monitor the latest information available from public health sources. Adelphi hosted an informational session with Dr. K.C. Rondello and Jacqueline Cartabuke, M.S., ANP-BC, director of Health Services and chair of Health & Wellness Committee to inform the campus about the virus. In addition, our Center for Health Innovation hosted the public forum “Ebola and Beyond: Are We Ready?” that featured regional public health experts and local hospital executives to discuss our region’s heathcare centers state of readiness. This exceptional program was livestreamed from our University Center and the video has been posted to the University’s YouTube Channel.
The University Health Services Center continues to regularly monitor the CDC, NYS Department of Health and the American College Health Association websites, coordinates with colleagues at local campuses and public health officials and shares information through its Twitter feed. Based on the current available information, and with the holiday breaks approaching, the University has instituted the following measures. These measures are subject to change based on evolving recommendations:
- CDC continues to urge all US residents to avoid nonessential travel to Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. Given this advice from the CDC, and our responsibility to protect the health of the Adelphi community, the University continues to prohibit student, faculty, and staff travel for any University purpose to these three countries. In prior years, and based on similar travel advisories from the CDC or US State Department, we have curtailed University-sponsored travel to global hot spots. Those seeking exceptions should be in touch with their school dean’s office before making any travel plans and for information about protocols for returning to the Adelphi campus.
- Any student, faculty, or staff who does travel to Guinea, Liberia, or Sierra Leone or who believes that he or she has had contact with anyone infected with Ebola within the last 21 days (such as hosting a visitor from the affected countries) must contact University Health Services prior to entering any University campus, facility, or function. University Health Services staff will evaluate these individuals for possible Ebola exposure. Please call the University Health Center at 516-877-6000 for details.
- Any new student coming to Adelphi from Guinea, Liberia, or Sierra Leone, or who believes that he or she has had contact with anyone infected with Ebola within the last 21 days must contact University Health Services on arrival in the US and prior to entering any University campus, facility, or function. University Health Services staff will evaluate these individuals for possible Ebola exposure.
