Security Awareness, Crime Prevention and Reporting

Promoting safety and addressing issues.

Representatives of the University join together at student and employee orientations to provide information and advice to newcomers to the University. Presentations are also conducted for parents, providing them with the opportunity to become familiar with the Department of Public Safety and Transportation and to address concerns and questions.

Command Center at Adelphi

Victims or witnesses are encouraged to report all incidents to Adelphi University Public Safety (or the local police department if appropriate), regardless of how insignificant the crime may seem. Public Safety or police officers will respond at any time of day or night to meet the victim/witness, take a report, investigate the incident, and provide assistance.

Adelphi Public Safety Officers are trained to investigate most crimes, however, the local police department will typically be contacted for crimes of a more serious nature. Adelphi University Public Safety Officers on the Garden City campus are accessible to students 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year by simply dialing 5 from any campus telephone, or going directly to the Public Safety Command Center located at the west side of Levermore Hall. Other campuses have Public Safety Officers or contracted officers during school hours. A network of college and external support services is available to all victims/witnesses.

All professional and pastoral counselors at Adelphi University are encouraged to advise the person they are counseling to report incidents to the proper authorities (Adelphi University Department of Public Safety and Transportation or the local police department), if and when the counselor thinks it is appropriate. Upon request, this information, when possible, will be kept confidential.
